A call from USCIS
I received a phone call from USCIS today. About a month ago, I submitted an expedite request for my VAWA case since it’s been three years and two months with no update. Then, just this past Sunday, I sent an email to the VAWA office following up on the request. This morning, while I was at work, I got a call from “USCIS” — that’s exactly what appeared on my phone screen, but no number was shown. My heart dropped when I saw it. I answered, and the officer asked me to verify my name, address, my parents’ names, case number, and the date I filed my VAWA. She said they had received both my expedite request and my request for an online access code, and that the access code would be mailed to me within three days. (That part confused me.) I immediately called my lawyer, who mentioned that USCIS usually calls only when someone requests an online access code — though I don’t recall making that request. I also asked about the parole fee and whether it applies to me as a VAWA applicant. The officer said , “If you receive payment instructions in the mail or online, follow the payment instructions and just pay.” But I’m confused because other lawyers, including mine previously, said the parole fee doesn’t apply to VAWA applicants. Has anyone else recently received a phone call from USCIS regarding an online access code or an expedite request?

Never heard of that access code thing before. Maybe it’s a new thing but yes I have heard of people getting phone calls from USCIS when they request expedite process. Some officers that adjudicate your case sometimes maybe new and/or are not fully informed of how VAWA works & they just follow instructions on their training manual. This may have been the case here. When he said ‘If you receive payment instructions…………………..and just pay’ it’s likely because he doesn’t know that VAWA applicants are exempt from fees, but yes, you’re exempt from all fees.
