Gang-related violence in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area has resulted in racketeering, kidnappings and various other criminal acts in a context characterized by deep inequalities, a severe lack of vital resources and the breakdown of security. Neighborhoods with the highest levels of violence are suffering economic distress, as recent spikes in food and fuel prices further erode already precarious livelihoods.
