Clarification Needed on Resident since on greencard
Ok guys I need your input on this. My greencard was approved February 13, 2025. However, when I got my physical card it said “Resident Since 12/22/2018”. However, this was the day I entered the US on a Visitor Visa same date listed on my I-94. I filed my VAWA July 2021 and Greencard as mention before approved February 13, 2025. The expiration date on my greencard is February 13, 2035. So in order words it’s saying am a LPR resident since 2018 for 6 years. Is this the same for you VAWA greencard hilders? does it show the resident date when you entered to live? please respond thanks. I called USCIS for clarification and they said an officer will give me a call so am waiting on that.

@sweet Lins I’ve heard of people having the 'Resident Since' date on their card as the date they filed their application (priority date). For example, in your case, July 2021. This is the first time I’m hearing of the 'Resident Since' date being based on the date listed on the I-94. Please wait for their call to get clarification.

@sweet Lins I have heard of stories as yours being an error. I would advice you to pls consult a lawyer or call them to clarify. Do not file for citizenship so you won’t be accused of something that’s none of your making. You have come this far, so pls get clarification even if it means you spending a few hundred $ to make sure it’s not an error. I would be following to know the outcome however congrats for coming this far.

It sounds like there might be an error on your green card. The “Resident Since” date on a green card typically reflects the date the person became a lawful permanent resident (LPR), not the date they entered the U.S. on a nonimmigrant visa (such as a visitor visa). Since your VAWA-based green card was approved on February 13, 2025, the “Resident Since” date should usually reflect either:
1. The date your I-360 (VAWA) was approved (if processed as an immediate adjustment).
2. The date you were granted LPR status through adjustment of status (if approved with the I-485 application).
However, in some cases, USCIS may backdate the “Resident Since” date based on prior eligibility—such as when you had an earlier pending application or when you qualified for relief retroactively. But it is unusual for it to be dated all the way back to when you entered as a visitor in December 2018 unless you had some other basis for LPR status at that time.
You might want to:
• Check your approval notice from USCIS (Form I-797) to see if the “Resident Since” date matches what is on your card.
• Call USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 or submit a service request if you suspect an error.
• Consult an immigration attorney if needed, especially if this affects naturalization (since time as an LPR impacts when you can apply for citizenship).
Do you recall any prior applications before VAWA that could explain the backdating?

@A T I did no prior applications. I was married to a US Citizen, the only application I filed was VAWA in 2021. But like I mention before am waiting for an officer to call me back. Or I will make an appointment to go to the USCIS office here in Chicago for an immediate update cause I have a trip schedule in April to my home country.
