48 months GC Extension
I received a 48 months extension on my I551 for my I751 application. It says 48 months from date of expiration. Well my GC expired in April 2019 meaning that it’s almost 48 months since my 2 year GC expired. If the extension is from date of expiration of my GC and for me 48 months from date of expiration is next month April 2023. what does that mean? The extension letter also says present your expired GC together with the extension letter for work and travel. Does that mean that I only have about one month to go before I’m out of status? The USCIS website says that and I quote “By presenting your updated receipt notice with your expired Green Card, you remain authorized to work and travel for 48 months from the expiration date on the front of your expired Green Card”. Based on what the front of my expired GC says, my 48 month extension is almost up in April 2023. Can someone please help explain what this extension means in my case?

@C K my sister in law got the same thing as you. She got 48 months extension also but she just received a mail stating they they canceled her interview. and I guess it means they added on 48 months more to the 2 years that you had

@P Ramgobin my status still shows “scheduled for interview” since Feb 2022. It’s been 48 months since my 2 years GC expired…

Go and get a stamp in your passport. call and make an appointment. Don’t travel with expired documents. Also ensure that your passport is valid.

@NMW Spoon I have the stamp in my passport which expires June 2023 and my passport is valid for some years.

@faizan naeem if they say that the extension is from the expiration date on the stamp in the passport then that makes sense. but they say that the expiration date is the one on actual green card. I’m optimistic that this means we will get our cases concluded soon since it’s almost 48months for us.

@C K, I got the same mail. my 2 years expired July 2020 and I’m still waiting in my I-751 approval. I had my passport stamped last year which would expire this year July. When I called USCIS, they said I cannot use the extension of my expired card was collected at the point of stamping my passport but that I can travel with my ADIT stamp until it expires. My advice is that you go and get your unexpired passport stamped at the field office. I think they can also give you a Stamped card with your passport photographs, if you do not have a passport. but call them to be sure. A tier 2 officer would need to book you an appointment.

mines says the same thing, but if you read again it should state 48 months from when your i551 expires. that is tha stamp in your passport

@Olawumi O I have the stamp in my passport and the stamp expires in June.

@C K the extension I got says 48 months extension from the expired date of my I-751 green card. When I spoke with the USCIS officer, she said I can only use the extension with the expired green card. Since my green card was collected at the point of stamping my passport, the officer said it’s safer to get another stamp in my passport but not to travel with the extension because they would ask for your card. I think you are good if you still have your card

@CK same here

@Olawumi O I still have my card and the stamp. Status says ready to schedule for interview for over one year now. I hear a lot of interviews are being cancelled…

@C K it’s really pathetic what they are doing! imagine when I went to their office the day I was supposed to have my interview and even the day I went to ask for another stamp, a lot of them were just lazing around doing nothing and whenever you call, they say they have backlogs. it’s just really sad and shows they don’t give a damn about immigrants
