COVID lockdown explanation of extended absence
My friend and his spouse are green card holders ( originally immigrated through family based visa as his mother is a US citizen). They kept traveling back and forth between home country and USA ensuring they don’t stay more than 6 months outside of USA. However, with the pandemic and the lockdown, their flights were cancelled and they ended up returning to the US after 8 months. In addition, they also suffered from an immediate family death during this time as well. As this is a break in continuity, how can he best explain this situation during application? should he explain all of it in a letter? any additional documentation he can provide to explain it? please advise

It’s not their fault but the government. They will be ok.

If I remember correctly, as long as they did not spend more than a year outside of the US they should be ok. After a year it would be considered they abandoned their permanent residence status
