I had I601 done about 10 years ago and was approved and now I'm a US citizen. It is a little hard to get an I601 approved, mine was for an overstay. You must write a letter explaining why you must comeback or remain in the USA and the reason has to be an extreme hardship to the US citizen. You must provide a lot of evidence backing up your claim. I suggest you read about the I601 experience from others online and search their letters and what kind of hardship they faced so you can have an idea what is extreme hardship. I think you should hire a lawyer and a good one because I601 is not easy to win.

Mine was for overstay. I applied the first time and was denied because I failed to show extreme hardship to the US citizen. Then I researched the I601 for a year to understand how to write a hardship letter and what kind of supporting documents should I include. The waiver was approved. I applied from outside the USA and the consular didn't ask me for anything related to my I601, they just processed my immigrant visa and handed me the immigrant packet. From my experience, the hardest part is to get the I601 waiver approved and once it's approved everything will go smooth after that
