He should file with a waiver. He should send in his divorce decree and all of the other evidences showing he had a bonafide marriage. most importantly he needs to add a lot of notarized affidavits from people that know the both of them

Affidavits are great to have and don’t hurt but a friend of mine who had this experience some time back found they didn’t hold much weight as evidence given they are easily faked in USCIS eyes. Apparently best evidence is still utility bills, bank statements, rental documents or the like, photos and the usual stuff you would take to the interview to show a bonafide marriage...and obviously the divorce decree. Most importantly, get an attorney. I would not attempt this alone

my friend has bank statement , copies of the lease and pictures of how he was in unhappy marriage , cause his wife used to threatened him of she's gonna deport him , pictures of how she used to do violence on him . and one day she even reported him to the police for domestic violence she wanted to get him deported but the judge didn't even care about the case and didn't charge him with no crime and didn't even went to jail , it was a crazy relationship

your friend should get a lawyer. sounds like he should either file with a divorce waiver or VAWA. a lawyer can advise better
