I traveled to Kenya and Germany, then drove to Italyand Switzerland as well. For my first return/trip, they sent me to secondary screening, and after about 10-15 minutes, an officer called my name and asked if I was waiting for my green card. I said yes, and he said, "Okay, welcome back." That was through IAD airport. The second time was through ORD, and there were no questions asked. I just presented my travel document; they stamped it and let me through without questions or secondary screening.

you don’t need to apply for a visa when visiting Germany. it is one of the visa free countries with your travel document
